With a simple philosophy - “Celebrate Life Everyday”, Deepa Sonawala along with local artisans brings you a journey of creativity and craftsmanship, where every piece tells a story—your story, our story, and the story of Indian artisanship.
A Kutchi with her roots in Bangalore, Deepa was born and brought up in Mumbai. After around three decades in her family business, she stepped into pottery as a therapeutic outlet, pushed by her son. It helped her heal in one of the darkest phases of life, helping her find the joy and purpose in living. After training at Clay Station for two years, she launched her pottery learning center in 2018, eventually turning into her pottery studio in 2019. Contract manufacturing made her expand further and bring in traditional artisans from the neighboring villages of Karnataka. These artisans from potter families finally found the platform to sustain themselves and their heritage craft. “Pottery is in their blood and way of life. That needs to be preserved!”
The journey began with a simple love for the earthy art of pottery that also reflects the rich heritage of Indian craftsmanship. “We aim to help the artisans sustain the knowledge of transforming a lump of clay to a work-of-art, and help pass it on to the next generation.” She believes the beauty of handmade products should be savored, so stop waiting for a special occasion and start using beautifully handcrafted ceramics every day.
She loves experimenting with forms and textures with her in-house glazes and clay. Tattva refers to the five elements of nature and as Deepa points out, the best pieces only come out with the right balance of these natural elements. “Each product holds within itself the feel of Mother Earth, and by using them, you can truly experience its essence and beauty. At Tattva Handmade, we strive to create products that are not only beautiful but also connect you to the natural world and enrich your life, helping you celebrate each moment of daily life.”
